Sustainability Perspective Series: "What is a Waterway, Anyway?"

Zabriskie Hall Room 106, Wells College

Daniel Rinn, doctoral candidate in History at the University of Rochester, encourages his audience to reflect on the terms we use to describe our environment by looking at a handful of historic New York “waterways”. The division between “natural” and “unnatural” is not as easy to draw as one might initially think. A waterway is more than a means of transporting goods or people; they can transport ideas and culture as well. Integrating video clips, music, and examples of visual art, Rinn will illustrate the reciprocal relationship between waterways and human culture.

Sustainability film: Once Was Water

DeWitt Lecture Room 106, Zabriskie Hall, Wells College

Las Vegas, in the middle of the Mojave Desert, is the driest city in America, yet it leads the United States in sustainable water conservation. The efforts of Las Vegas, in its search for sustainability, have produced promising solutions-- technological, political, and financial-- providing an on-going global model for any city creating their own sustainable water system. Everything to do with Las Vegas's water supply and disposal is watched, measured and checked. 40% of the water is recycled for indoor use. Every drop is monitored acoustically to detect possible leaks within 6,500 miles of pipes. The film follows the story of Patricia Mulroy, the controversial founder of the Southern Nevada Water Authority, whose leadership is shaping Colorado River politics, providing a path to safety in the face of intensifying water scarcity. Running time: 55 minutes. Free and open to the public. Organic popcorn and butter will be served.
